Pairing your phone, step by step

Switch Companion on and the Mac shows a code. Anything with a browser on the same Wi-Fi can scan it — a phone, a tablet, another laptop — and a new code is generated every time it is switched on; nothing is listening while it is off.

Once paired, the phone reads the answer where a screen share cannot reach, and typing into its note lands on the Mac straight away. Asking a question or re-running the write-up from the phone still spends the account, so both wait for a yes on the Mac before they run.

The call ending ends the pairing with it: the port closes, the code dies, and the phone is left holding nothing. The port also closes at every launch, so a code from a previous session can never be reused.
